Swallow the Sun - Lumina Aurea (2018)

As you surely know, this EP contains a single song in which guitarist and band leader Juha Raivio comes to terms with the death of his girlfriend. She died of cancer in 2016. It's therefore a very dark and ambient track. Latin Gregorian chants and latin lyrics - spoken and sung by Marco Benevento (The Foreshadowing) - play an important role.

The song reminds me of old myths in which dead bodies can/ has to cross a river in order to reach the underworld or the promised land. In ancient Greece mythology this river was called Styx, the ferryman's name was Charon and the underworld was called Hades). But there are other legends as well, I think the great CD "Saivo" by Tenhi deals with this topic as well. The cover also shows a boat and mysterious figures.

*** edit ***
Recently, I've got some help from a cool guy who sent me the lyrics (as you can see in the comment section). So let's see what I've got and let's fill the gaps:

The motto which is shown at the end of the video is
mors fortior quam vita est, - death is more powerful than life,
amor fortior quam mors est. - love is more powerful than death.

Lumina aurea - golden lights ("lumen" is not only "light", but also the ability to see and the energy/light that shines as long as you live)

[2:02]
Gregorian chants start, which I don't understand

(last comment on the grammar: "in itinerem" is wrong, because "iter - the way" has a neutral gender, therefor the accusative is also "iter". Also, I would have build the sencence differently: "to follow" has two additional informations: "whom?" and "when/ where/ where to"? First, "te sequor - I follow you" is correct. "in iter aureum" indicates the destination: "towards the golden way/ path". To say "iter aureum sequor - I follow the golden path" would be correct as well. But here, the author combines two accusative objects - this is what I doubt. I would prefer the ablative "in itinere aureo" to express the way/ method on which or with which he follows her.)

Mayhem - Deamon (2019)

Well, there is a Norwegian black metal band called Mayhem. I guess some of you have already heard of them. They say that they are quite famous - don't know... Ok, Mayhem are bloody famous, but not for their Latin skills. They didn't much here in 2019 either.

The song title Agenda Ignis means The agenda of fire.

The song "Malum" contains Latin lyrics:

Mors certa hora incerta - death is certain, the hour uncertain
Daemonem liberta - Free the deamon! (The imperative "free!" means "libera" in Latin, "liberta" isn't a correct form)

Mens mala - Evil sense
Animus malus - Evil soul
Ab infernus sulus - From infernal soil (this is what I guess. "sulus" doesn't exist. "solum" means "soil". The preposition "ab" needs the ablative case which would be "ab inferno solo")

Daleo perdeo extinguo - ???, I destroy (correct: "perdo"), I exstinguish
Malum magnum excito - I evoke the big evil
Daleo perdeo extinguo - see above
Malum magnum excito - see above
Convoro lucem - I devour light.
Purifies ad crucem - ??? to the cross (maybe they mean "purify")

Adlecto necto - ??? ??? (no existing words)
Mortem vesto - ??? death
Impetus excitus - called attack (?)

Daleo perdeo extinguo - see above
Well, the majority of the phrases are ok, but I have no explanations for some words which haven't anything in common with Latin words.

The German black Metal band "Negator" has recently released their newest record. The name of the record as well as some titles are in Latin, and there is also a whole song written in Latin - so there is some work to be done.

First, the titles:

Vnitas Pvritas Existentia - unity, purity, existence (To write "v" instead of "u" maybe echoes Roman insciptions. It's easier to carve a "v" than an "u")

Sanguis serpentis - blood of the snake

chaire phôs (ancient Greek) - hello light

Ritus sex - Rite Nr. 6

Regnum spiritus immundi - the reign of the impure soul/ spirit

Et verbvm caro factvm est - the word made flesh (The song starts with the Latin word "oremus" which means "let us pray")

And now the lyrics of the song "Ritus sex":

Hats off to Negator! The Latin phrases are all grammatically correct.markheimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07862985049579791028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227431689471589429.post-59568503802530568552019-07-13T12:23:00.003+02:002019-07-13T13:13:24.844+02:00Powerwolf - The Sacrament of Sin

Powerwolf - The Sacrament of Sin (2018)

On "The Sacrament of Sin" there is the song "Stoßgebet". Someone commented correctly on youtube: "Basically, it's about sex. Stoßgebet is a play on words because it means
quick prayer, but "stoßen" is also the movement during sex."Also the next German phrase is ambigous: "Der Kirchturmpfahl zum Himmel steht" means "The church tower's pole stands tall in the sky". It's funny that the German word "Pfahl - pole, stake" sounds like "phallus", but there is - as long as I see - no connection. Both words have different roots.

So, here are the lyrics:

Ave Fornicatio et Sacrilegum - Hail fornication and sin
Deus Peccatoribus et Patrum Iesu - God for the sinners and Father of Jesus
Oremus Per Coitum et Patris Deum - let us pray by coitus and by the God of the father
Animus In Libidum et Crucem Meum - soul in lust and my cross
Ave Fornicatio et Sacrilegum - Hail fornication and sin

Ave Phallus Dominum Evaginatio - Hail phallus Lord excess
Ferrum Corporalium Sanguinem Virgum - iron of the body, blood of the virgin (?)

The Latin words aren't always correct in case and endings, so this is my interpretation of the lyrics.
Have fun!markheimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07862985049579791028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227431689471589429.post-71473455694675904112019-07-13T11:45:00.001+02:002019-07-13T11:49:09.585+02:00Osmi Putnik - Maleficium Taciturnitatus

Osmi Putnik - Ulična molitva (1986)

The Croatian metal band Osmi Putnik ("Eight Traveller/ Passenger") released their first full lenght record in 1986. The last song "Maleficium Tacitunitatus" contains Latin and Croatian lyrics.

Someone wrote in a comment at youtube:

Diabolus dominus - Devil Lord
corrumpere non potuit - could't break/ ruin/ corrupt
(here, the accusativ case is missing: couldn't break whom? - maybe the band means: "the devil could't break the Lord", so "Dominum" would have been the correct form)

lise sencie simenca mandukaren - (not Latin)<not latin=""></not>

Veritas dobi - truth <not latin="">(not Latin)</not>
saecula casen - centuries (not Latin)<not latin=""></not>
greve en lucie - (not Latin)<not latin=""></not>
en plom file obscuritatus - (not Latin) <not latin=""> of the darkness</not>

Maleficium taciturnitatus - crime in Silence

The lyrics are quite strange. It seems to me that someone just picked some words out of the dictionary. Also, the two adjectives "obscuritatus" and "taciturnitatus" are no words used correctly in ancient times, but you understand what they should mean.markheimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07862985049579791028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227431689471589429.post-50617300340300627522018-03-08T10:02:00.000+01:002018-03-08T10:02:40.469+01:00Arch Enemy - Tempore nihil sanat

Ghost - Infestissumam (2013)

"Infestissumam" is the superlative form of "infestus - hostile, threatening, dangerous". It's accusative case feminine: whom? - "the most hostile one". Because of the "u" instead of "i" it sounds like archaic Latin - like the English pronouns "thou" and "thee".

The lyrics are written in Latin and Italian, although the grammar isn't always correct:

Il padre - The father
Il filio - The son
Et lo spiritus malum - and the bad spirit
Omnis caelestis - every celestial one
Delenda est - must be destroyed

Anti Cristus - Antichrist
Il filio de Sathanas - Satan's son
Anti Cristus - Antichrist
Il filio de Sathanas - Satan's son
Infestissumam - the most hostile one (again, this is feminine!)

The second song is called: Per aspera ad inferi. This means "Through hardships into the hell." The grammatically correct phrase would be: per aspera ad inferos.
Absolutus - Pugnare in Iis quae obtinere non possis (2015)

Absolutus is an avantegarde black metal band from Belgium. They've already released two albums and one EP. All of them have Latin litles, whereas the lyrics are in English - as far as I could listen.

Album - Ostendit quam nihil sumus
He/ she/ it demonstrates that we are nothing - The ancient Roman philosopher Seneca used the phrase in his letter 101 to Lucilius. There he wrote: "Every day, every hour demonstrates us that we are nothing."

EP - Nihil mali non inest
There is nothing bad not in it. - A sentence from Cicero, taken from a letter he wrote to Atticus (VIII,4)

Album - Pugnare in iis quae obtinere non possis
To fight against this you can't obtain - A phrase from Quintilian (VI,14). All album tracks have Latin titles as well:

Abyssus Abyssum Invocat - The abyss invoces the abyss

Sunt Verba et Voces Praetereaque Nihil - There are words and voices and nothing more

Credo Quia Absurdum - I believe because it's absurd

Ego Sum Qui Sum- I am who I am

Damnat Quod Non Intelligunt - He damns what they don't understand

Pugnare in iis Quae Obtinere Non Possis - see above

Decepimur Specie Recti - We are decieved by the appearance of the right

Virgo Dei Genitrix - the virgin mother of God

Numen - Divine power/ presence

There I found a recent Motörhead-concert. On their backdrop they had the latin words victoria aut morte.

victoria is nominative or ablative case, morte is just ablative case. Therefore it means by victory or death. The yell "victory or death" would be victoria aut mors or victoriam aut mortem.markheimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07862985049579791028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227431689471589429.post-11787673017588924722015-07-26T11:05:00.006+02:002015-07-26T11:08:14.939+02:00Powerwolf - Blessed & Possessed

~ Armata Strigoi ~

Armata means armed and strigoi sounds like the latin word striga - witch. But the ending "-oi" ist masculine plural in Ancient Greek, therefore the basic form must be "strigos". This is the name of the Warhammer's "Empire of Vampyre" [by the way, if Powerwolf ever gonna cooperate with Cradle of Filth ("Powerfilth"), this would be the perfect album's title - feel free to use it!].

A nice collection of Latin words; and in the wild and free country of the wraiths, in the empire of vampyre, there is no need of a dictionary and of following grammar rules, auuuuuuuuuuuuhhh!

Powerwolf - Lupus Dei (2007)

Powerwolf arose out of the void and ascended the top of the cross within just a few years. Their last record reached the top of the German charts, their newest one - released today - may repeat the success. We'll see. At the moment, I lack the whole lyrics of their new record, therefore I enter the past and gonna talk about their 2007-release "Lupus Dei".

The first song (The Wolf of the Demon) and the last one (The Wolf of God) on this record contain latin phrases:

~ Lupus Daemonis ~

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.

This is the Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou
amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,
Mother of God, pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of death. Amen.

~ Lupus Dei ~

Cantus lupus
Satura luna
Corpus nudus domina

Agnus totus
Animus mortus
Ave deus sinistra

Cultus lupus
Opus damnatus
Metus mortis nocturna

Terra sanguis
Padre occultus
Sanctus pupus anima

These words are grammatically c..., a few latin words just strung together without considering grammar rules, declination or conjugation. I translate them litterally, so everybody can interpret them by himself.

Totally wrong is the line corpus nudus domina for example. The word "corpus" is neutral case, the word "domina" feminine case. If "nudus" should refer to "corpus", the correct ending would be "nudum", if if should refer to "domina", the correct ending would be "nuda", or better, in genitive case (= of the nude lady) "dominae nudae".

song wolf

sated moon

body nude lady

lamb whole

Spirit dead

Ave god evil

cult wolf

work damned

fear of the dead nocturnal

land blood

by the father occult

holy little boy soul

But there are more important things like case endings, if you reach the top of the charts, I guess.... Look forward new record. To see you. !

The title song of this record contains a longer latin prayer, an invocation of Satan.

Satana, qui unus es dominus nobis
prodimus deum orbis terrarum
Tibi profundimus sanguinem nostrum liberarumque
subscribamus atrum voluminem mortis.
Et gratiam tibi agimus pro peccata nostra.
Stigma, quod nobis ipse impressisti, ostendimus.
Tibi confitemur peccata nostra
ut coniungas nos convivium ubertatis.
Nostrum cibum Belzeb consecra et vinculum
nigrae catenae solida.
Coniunge animas saltatione et commissatione
ad honorem tui, ut disiungat nos lux, Amen.

we produce the god of the world

and the fat woman

We pour for you our blood and that of our children,

let us sign the black contract of death.

We show the sign, which you have imprinted us by yourself.

To you we confide our sins

so that you join us in the feast of fecundity.

.Connect the souls by dance and coalescence
for your glory, so that light leaves us, amen.

Although the grammar is quite good, still there are some words which I can't unterstand.
What is the sense of the accusative plural masculine "sanctos"?
How to use the second accusative object "convivium"?
Is "Belzeb" dative case?
What means "commisatio" - here used in ablative case "commissatione"? The word doesn't exist, but there is "commissio", ablative case "commissione"- coalescence.markheimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07862985049579791028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227431689471589429.post-17168990971817035932014-12-13T16:27:00.005+01:002014-12-13T16:27:59.981+01:00Ignis Haereticum - Luciferian Gnosis

Ignis Haereticum (The Fire of Haeresy) is a band situated in Cúcuta, North Colombia - a fascinating and charming country, where I sometimes have witnessed the mixture of old spiritual beliefs and Christian theology. It is a country still inbued with Catholicism. I think you have to be a pro or an anti, but normally you aren't indifferen ttowards it. Ignis Haereticum are anti. They express their beliefs with occult and orthodox black metal and therefore they use plenty of Latin. Unfortunately, I just found the song titles.

sub tuum praesidium - under your protection

mysterium fidei - the mistery of faith

ad serpentem tortuosum - towards the winding serpent

de sphinge revelationem mysterii - about the sphinx the revelation of mystery (grammatically not perfect and therefore not quite clear)

exercitatus spritualium - as well not quite clear: the first word means litterally "trained, busy with, afflicted", the second one "of the spiritual/ intellectual ones". The genitive case can also be translated with "for the spiritual ones". Most likely: spiritually trained

sic luceat lux vestra - so shall shine your light!

I have to confess that I have a bias against female-fronted power metal bands. I know Epica, which means that I know that this is a metal band. Up to the present I'haven't heard any single note of them. Just wait a second... Now I know the title track. Not that bad, but FFSM (female-fronted symphonic metal). If you love steaks, of course you "can" also eat vegan food, but...

Nevertheless, this is an objective blog and I gonna return to the point of interest. "Epica" sounds latin and they use plenty of it. I found a post in the internet where someone says that the band asked a Latin teacher to translate the phrases. Quite possible, because the grammar is almost correct and because Epica's lyrics are the only source where I can find the phrases. Normally, (black) metal bands consult the bible to find (un)holy sayings.

On Epica's newest record - I'll start there and plunge into their history - you can find three songs with latin fragments:

~ Originem ~

originem is the accusative case of origo - origin.

Nos sumus conjuncti - We are connected

Fontem nostram quaerentes - searching our source

Originem sciendi - the origin of knowledge

Nos pleni vigoris - We're full of vitality

Quo colendo res fiunt - things happen by cultivating/ fostering it
Sic naturam fingimus - So we form nature

Aenigma solventes - Solving enigmas

E(g)rediamur - we shall move forward
Nil, certum est - nothing is certain

~ The Second Stone ~

O, ne moriar bis - Oh, for not dying twice
Oro supplex - I pray humbly

O, ne discedam bis - Oh, for not passing away twice
Oro supplex - I pray humbly

~ The Quantum Enigma ~

Visum commutamus - We change the view
Nihil certum - Nothing (is) certain
Qui observat, visi - He, who watches, is
pars est - part of the view

Omne est vigor - everything is vitality
Sentimus eum - we feel it
Sic(u)t concretum - like the concrete (the real)
Vigor concrescit - Vitality compacts
Observatione - by observation
Vita est mare - Life is a sea
Infinitarum facultatum - of infinite possibilities
Si quae emergant opperiens - If it covers what emerges
Anaal Nathrakh - Desideratum (2014)

Did Anaal Nathrakh think of their fans when they called they record to come "Desideratum"? I in any case really look forward to the record. At the moment, I've just the album and song titles, and that is what they mean:

Desideratum - that what is desired (the Latin verb "desiderare" contains the root "sidus - star", I don't know if the band knew this while they were thinking about the cover design)

~ ~ ~

Acheronta Movebimus - we're going to move the Acheron (a Greek river, one of the five rivers of the underworld in Ancient Greek mythology)

Monstrum in animo - A monster in mind

Sub specie aeterni - Unter the splendour of eternity

Ita mori - so to die

All Latin phrases are grammatically correct.

Abruptum

The most of Abruptum's albums and/ or titles are written in Latin, sometimes correct, sometimes not. Here are the translations, beginning with the oldest record.

obscuritatem invoco amplectere me - I call the darkness to embrace me (This translation is not correct, because "to embrace" is not an infinitve but a final clause. The English language is ambiguous in this aspect, the Latin language not. Correct translations would have been: "ad me amplectendum" / "me amplectendi causa" ... and others)

In umbra malitiae ambulabo, in aeternum in triumpho tenebrarum - I will walk in the shadow of malice, into aeternity / eternally in the triumph of darkness

Vi sonus veris nigrae malitiaes - This sentence I don't understand. Vi is ablative case and means by force/ power, sonus means sound (nominative case), veris is dative or ablative case and means therefore to the true people / by the true..., nigrae is genitive or dative feminine case and means of the black / to the black, and malitiaes means malice as written above, but the ending -aes doesn't exist.
So, this sentence doesn't make sense. Maybe it should mean: In power (lies) the sound of true black malice, but this is a very doubtful interpretation.

De profundis mors vas consumet - Out of the depths death will consume the container, which means "body", the container of the soul, I guess.

On the record Casus Luciferi there are four songs, all with Latin titles:
casus Luciferi - the case of Lucifer
in ictu oculi - in the gaze
ex inferno inferiori - out of the inferno of the underworld/ out of the undermost inferno
Gehennae perpetuae cruciatus - the crucified of eternal Gehenna

maledictum - swear word/ blasphemy

Potestates Apocalypsis (Pestilencia, Bellum, Fames, Mort/ Mors) - The powers ot the apocalypse (pestilence, war, hunger, death)

Opeth - Pale Communion (2014)

I have to confess, I was not the first. For I was on holiday the last days, I couldn't buy the new Opeth record yet and therefore it was wikipedia who told me that there are three latin sayings in the triptych you can see on the cover. Where are my sackcloth and the ashes?

On the left: An nescis, mi fili, quantilla prudentia mundus regatur? - Do you not know, my son, with how little wisdom the world is governed?
The Swedish statesman Axel Gustavsson Oxenstierna wrote this sentence to his son in 1648, because he wanted to encourage him for the forthcoming negociations which leaded to the Peace of Westphalia - the end of the Thirty Year's War.

In the middle: Hoc tempore obsequium amicos, veritas odium parit. - In these days friends are won through flattery, the truth gives birth to hate.
This sencence appears in the comedy "Andria", written by the Roman author Terence in 166 BC.

On the right: Ille dolet vere qui sine teste dolet. - He grieves truly who grieves without a witness.
You can find this phrase in Epigramma I,33 by Martialis. In this little poem he blames a girl because she just weeps over her dead father when witnesses are around.

Schammasch - Contradiction (2014)

Schammasch loves the light! You'll find this topic quite often in their lyrics. In the first record's title you had "lux - light" and "luceat - it shall shine". Now, in the second track of their new record, there is the adjective "lucidum - shining, bright, lucid".

Aleph lucidum in noluntas Dei - A shining beginning (lies) in the displeasure of God

This is my interpretation; "aleph" is the first letter in the Hebrew "alpha"bet (!), the verb "to be" I added because such a simple verb often lacks in Latin sentences. And - to use the teacher's red pencil again - it should be "in noluntate". Well....

The Tower - Hic Abundant Leones (2014)

The title of the reacord means Here we have an abundance of lions. In old maps this saying (sometimes together with a picture of a lion) was used to express that this area is still unexplored and might be dangerous.

The first song title is Non Omnis Moriar. You can find these three words in the poem Carmina III.30, written by the famous ancient Roman writer Horace (he who also wrote Carpe Diem). In this poem he says: I'm not gonna die wholly. With an abundance of self-confidence he says that he has created something which will last longer than eternal bronze, so his work will survive.

Ævangelist - De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis (2012)

This title is quite nice, because a title starting with "de" - "about" was typical for scientific and/or philophical works written in latin (in ancient Rome as well as in times of Humanism and Renaissance). It means "About the cheewing of the deads in the graves". The title's meaning is ambiguous: it means that the dead are still chewing as well as that the dead are eaten.

On the album there are two titles with latin words:
- Anno Mortii - In the year of the dead
- Crematorium Angelicum - the angel's crematory

In 2013 they released another album with a Latin title: Omen Ex Simulacra. The word omen means the same as in English, ex means "out of/ from" and simulacrum image, reflection, shadow, illusion, wraith.
Vader - Tibi Et Igni (2014)

Just three words to translate. They mean For you and for the fire. As far as I found out, tibi et igni was a postscipt written under secret documents. Luckily, the CD won't gonna destroy itself after you've listened to it. markheimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07862985049579791028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6227431689471589429.post-17899990436065594282013-11-09T22:38:00.000+01:002013-11-09T22:39:58.400+01:00Ihsahn - Das Seelenbrechen

Welcome, trick Nr.5! Quite dark and obscure, more a network of mere impressions. Ihsahn used some German words and some Latin ones as well - so here we go:

Hiber - the noun hiems means winter, and the adjective hibernus wintry.

Tacit - he/she/it remains silent

Sub Ater - sub means under/ underneath and ater means dark, black. The term sub ater isn't grammatically correct: under the black would be sub atrum/ sub atra, and underneath the black sub atro/ atris.

Sum quad eris - (what the choir sings in "Regen") This is a spelling mistake, it must be sum quod eris - I am what you'll be. This was a often used writing on tombstones: fui quod es, sum quod eris - I was, what you are (now), I am what you will be.
Or, in latin metres: Siste viator iter, per me tu gnothi seauton, Nam quod es hoc fueram, quod sum nunc et eris - Hold on, traveller, with my help you know yourself, because what you are, was I and what I am now, you'll be.
